Central to The SEA People’s mission is profound respect for the richness and value of local people, their knowledge, rights and traditions. \u00a0We believe that meaningful and impactful conservation cannot be dictated from the outside to<\/em><\/span> local communities; but rather, must be done with and by; cultivated from within the communities themselves .\u00a0 In our pursuit of protecting and conserving Raja Ampat\u2019s coral reefs, we recognize that the people of Raja Ampat are not simply bystanders or beneficiaries, but rather, an integral part of this remarkable ecosystem, both benefiting from and influencing the ecosystem and the abundant services it provides (such as food, shelter, transport and medicine).<\/p>\n We adopt a holistic and collaborative model that positions local communities at its center, as vital participants and contributors to our conservation efforts. \u00a0By aligning our expertise with the lived experience and practices of local communities, we foster a co-ownership of the conservation process. It provides immediate financial support to their families, mitigating the prevalent economic pressures and allowing them to invest in their futures without foregoing day-to-day necessities. Employment during training ensures that acquiring new skills for long-term career advancement does not come at the cost of immediate well-being. We strive to elevate these voices, such that they are not only heard but are instrumental in decision-making and leadership. We are proud to foster an environment where women can have the opportunity to take the helm of conservation projects, guiding efforts with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
